project brief | St Mary Redcliffe and Temple is a 1080 student secondary school located in the centre of Bristol, on a highly constrained site more suited to a 420 place primary school.
Cube_design was appointed to develop an educational masterplan that led to the demolition of two existing buildings; and the construction of a new four-storey building that minimised the building footprint to maximize external play area. The 8600sqm new build accommodation includes Design Technology, Music, Drama, Food Technology, Textiles, Art, Science, ICT, Modern Foreign Languages, English, Maths, Drama and a Sports Hall with associated changing facilities.
Central to the design solution was the integration of a lightweight fabric canopy, which forms an external street that links and unifies the existing and new facilities under one footprint. The glazed façade of the new building onto the external street offers a sense of transparency and integration between the old and new facilities. Departments are clustered together across the four-storey building, linked via the central street now at the heart of the school. The design offers new opportunities, including a covered play area for all weather conditions.
