Unit 12 Headlands Business Park
project name | Sion Hill
location | Sion Hill, Bath
client | Bath Spa University
project value | £3.1 million
contract | JCT 2005
project brief | New studio and wood working workshop, new entrance and refurbishment of the University’s Art department.
Located in the centre of Bath, in a conservation area, the new intervention has been carefully controlled to integrate within the hierarchy of the existing buildings. The form and language used enhance and respond to the existing context and landscape.
The new entrance links the existing main building and studio, providing a strong focal point and statement of entrance, which was previously lacking. A lightweight fabric canopy links the existing studio, main building and new entrance with a sense of enclosure and creates a flexible space, which will be used for social events and outdoor studio work. The new studio building provides a large open plan, top light, studio space and offices. Woodwork has been relocated into the new studio to create further studio space within the existing building.
The materials were carefully selected to sensitively respond to the existing context and landscape. They express the new modern elements, as beautiful and elegant buildings, which have a synergetic relationship with the flowing landscape.
